A printer works by depositing microscopic dots of ink. "Dots per inch" describes how many of those dots it places along a single inch of paper. A typical inkjet printer can put down thousands of DPI — figures like 1200 or 4800 DPI are common in printer specs.
Here's the catch: those tiny ink dots aren't the same as the pixels in your image. It can take many ink dots to reproduce a single pixel with enough shades of color. So printer DPI is a spec of the machine, not a setting you need to match from your photo.
What most people actually need: PPI
When someone says "300 DPI" about a photo, they almost always mean PPI — pixels per inch: how many of your image's pixels will be packed into each inch of the print. That's the number that decides whether a print looks sharp or soft, and it's the number this site's calculators use.
The shorthand rule
In everyday conversation about printing photos, DPI and PPI are used interchangeably, and for practical purposes that's usually fine. The important question is simply: how many pixels per inch will this print have?
Work it out by dividing your image's pixel width by the print width in inches. A 4032-pixel-wide photo printed 13.4 inches wide works out to about 300 pixels per inch — the classic quality target for close-up viewing.
Why it matters for print size
