How Large Can I Print My Photo?

The short answer: it depends on your image's pixel count and how closely the print will be viewed. Here's the simple way to figure it out for any photo.

The one formula you need

Print width (inches) = image pixel width ÷ PPI. Do the same for height. The PPI you choose sets the quality: 300 for close-up prints, 150 for posters viewed from a distance.

Example: a 4032 × 3024 px photo at 300 PPI prints at 13.44 × 10.08 inches. At 150 PPI it doubles to 26.88 × 20.16 inches — roughly A2 poster size — at the cost of less sharpness up close.

There's no hard "maximum"

You can physically print any image at any size — printing software will simply scale the pixels. The real question is whether the result looks good. Below roughly 150 PPI, prints start to look soft when viewed up close, but become perfectly acceptable once viewed from a distance.

The practical process

  3. Divide the pixels by the print size to get the effective PPI.
  4. Compare with 300 PPI (close viewing) or 150 PPI (poster viewing).
